About the role

The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) seeks a consultant to support its Nature and Market‑based Solutions Section and the UN‑REDD Team in Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC). The specialist will provide technical inputs on safeguards coordination, integrate non‑carbon benefits into REDD+ frameworks, and help manage knowledge products for the UN‑REDD Safeguards and Integrity Working Group.

Key responsibilities

  • Provide technical expertise for the coordination, implementation and reporting of safeguards across the LAC region.
  • Develop a proposal to update the Safeguards Information System (SIS), including a functional and content design.
  • Support the operationalisation of safeguards instruments such as ESMPs, GAPs, stakeholder engagement plans and grievance mechanisms under UN‑REDD and Results‑Based Payments initiatives.
  • Collaborate with the UNEP LAC team to deliver technical assistance on non‑carbon benefits (NCBs) in Mexico and propose integration of NCBs into Mexico’s national SIS.
  • Participate in the coordination of the UN‑REDD Safeguards and Integrity Working Group for LAC, documenting sessions and impacts.
  • Produce technical reports, knowledge‑management products and other deliverables related to UNEP’s role in the UN‑REDD Programme.

Required profile

  • Demonstrated technical expertise in REDD+ safeguards coordination and reporting.
  • Experience with non‑carbon benefits integration and knowledge‑management in environmental programmes.
  • Familiarity with UN‑REDD processes, Results‑Based Payments and related safeguards instruments.
  • Ability to prepare technical documents in English and Spanish.

Required skills

  • Safeguards Information System (SIS) knowledge.
  • Understanding of ESMPs, GAPs, stakeholder engagement plans and grievance redress mechanisms.
  • Experience with Results‑Based Payments (RBP) frameworks.
