About the role
The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is seeking a Regional Biodiversity Specialist Consultant to support the implementation of its Nature Action Sub‑programme across Latin America and the Caribbean. Based in Panama City, the consultant will act as the technical focal point for biodiversity and ecosystem‑related initiatives, providing advice, coordination and partnership development to advance regional and global biodiversity commitments.
Key responsibilities
- Serve as the regional technical focal point for the Nature Action Sub‑programme, guiding biodiversity and ecosystem management activities.
- Assist in planning, programming and implementing the Regional Action Plan on Ecosystem Restoration.
- Provide technical advice to the Regional Nature Action Sub‑programme Coordinator and UNEP technical divisions.
- Support programme development, resource mobilisation and the preparation of concept notes and project proposals.
- Collect, curate and report information on nature‑related activities, and conduct political, technical and policy analyses.
- Identify biodiversity needs and opportunities in collaboration with sub‑regional and country offices.
- Establish and maintain partnerships with UN agencies, MEA secretariats, governments, academia, civil society and other stakeholders.
- Facilitate coordination of nature‑related activities across UNEP divisions and ensure alignment with regional priorities.
Required profile
- Advanced degree in environmental science, biodiversity, ecology or a related field.
- Proven experience in biodiversity policy, ecosystem restoration or related programmes at regional or international level.
- Demonstrated ability to work with multiple stakeholders, including governments, UN bodies and NGOs.
- Strong analytical and report‑writing skills, with experience in developing concept notes and project proposals.
Required skills
- Technical expertise in biodiversity and ecosystem management.
- Knowledge of international biodiversity agreements and MEA frameworks.
- Experience in partnership development and stakeholder engagement.
