Senior Writer & Public Information Officer

About the role

The Senior Writer & Public Information Officer will partner with the Assistant Dean, Chief Marketing Communications Officer and the Communications team to shape UCLA Samueli’s media presence. This senior communications professional will craft compelling stories, manage media relations, and amplify the school’s research achievements across traditional and digital platforms.

Key responsibilities

• Develop and execute a strategic media‑relations plan, including maintaining media lists and monitoring coverage.
• Identify news‑worthy research and faculty activities, pitch stories to journalists, and position experts as go‑to sources.
• Write and edit press releases, web features, op‑eds, alumni and student profiles, newsletters, marketing collateral, presentations and school announcements.
• Draft speeches, talking points and briefing materials for senior leadership.
• Coordinate posting on Twitter, Instagram, Facebook and LinkedIn to ensure consistent messaging.
• Create and manage a proactive public‑relations program, including a speaker’s bureau for the Dean and other leaders.

Required profile

• Seasoned communications professional with extensive media contacts and experience in higher‑education or research environments.
• Proven ability to work independently, develop strategic plans and produce high‑quality written content.
• Strong understanding of STEM research areas and the ability to translate complex topics for diverse audiences.
