Secondary Dean of Students

About the role

The Dean of Students works closely with the Secondary School Principal and Assistant Principals to foster a safe, inclusive, respectful, and accountable culture for Grades 8‑12. This senior leader provides day‑to‑day oversight of student behavior, attendance, engagement and tiered behavioral interventions in line with school policies.

Key responsibilities

• Support consistent implementation of behavior and attendance expectations across Grades 8‑12.
• Address student behavior concerns beyond classroom‑level, applying established consequences and restorative practices.
• Facilitate conflict resolution, restorative conversations, and re‑entry processes.
• Monitor attendance, tardiness, behavior and engagement data to identify patterns and coordinate targeted follow‑up.
• Coordinate Tier 2 and Tier 3 behavioral, attendance and engagement interventions, including mentoring, check‑in/check‑out and goal‑setting.
• Analyze student data, develop dashboards and provide concise reports to inform school‑wide decisions.
• Collaborate with teachers, counselors, families and extracurricular staff to ensure consistent implementation of interventions.

• Demonstrates sound judgment, discretion and confidentiality in complex student situations.
• Remains calm, solution‑oriented and proactive during conflict or high‑pressure situations.
• Communicates and collaborates effectively with students, colleagues and families.

Required skills

• Bachelor’s degree in Education, Counseling, Educational Leadership, Psychology or a related field.
• Significant experience working with middle‑ and/or high‑school students.
• Proven experience supporting student behavior, attendance and engagement through restorative and tiered interventions.
