HVAC Field Service Technician

About the role

The HVAC Field Service Technician is responsible for diagnosing, repairing, and performing preventative maintenance on commercial and industrial HVAC equipment. The role also includes training Level I technicians and escalating responsibilities as troubleshooting skills develop.

Key responsibilities

• Perform routine maintenance on VRV, unitary, rooftop, split‑system and chiller equipment (cleaning coils, brushing tubes, replacing filters, belts and lubricating components).
• Troubleshoot and diagnose CAT II and CAT III systems, including pipefitting, brazing, and electrical/refrigerant circuit repairs.
• Repair or replace defective components such as VFDs, compressors (screw, scroll, reciprocal), and high‑capacity rooftop units up to 150 tons.
• Conduct warranty inspections, start‑up testing, and provide customer education on operation and maintenance.
• Quote parts and labor for repairs, lead rebuilds of CAT II/III units, and mentor Level I technicians.
• Document billing, inventory, timecards, service reports and perform basic data entry.
• Download firmware to Micro controllers, analyze equipment trend data and communicate sales opportunities.

Required profile

• Beginner‑to‑intermediate proficiency in independent troubleshooting of CAT II and CAT III HVAC equipment.
• Ability to work safely with pipefitting, brazing and high‑pressure refrigerant systems.
• Strong communication skills to explain technical information to both technical and non‑technical audiences.
• Professional appearance and written/verbal communication standards.
• Basic computer literacy (email, internet, word processing) for data entry and reporting.

Required skills

• HVAC maintenance on VRV, rooftop, split‑system and chiller units.
• Pipefitting and brazing of CAT II/III equipment.
• Electrical and refrigerant circuit diagnostics.
• VFD programming and troubleshooting.
• Repair of screw, scroll and reciprocal compressors.
• Start‑up and warranty testing of equipment up to 200 tons.
• Use of Micro controllers and firmware download tools.
• Basic data analysis and computer skills (email, internet, word processing).
